January 8, 2022 12:00pm Winter Store update from Public Works

Good morning!

The COP Snow Fighters are on the streets in preparation for the impending weather event of freezing drizzle expected to reach central Illinois by early this afternoon.  With the forecasted ending of the freezing drizzle potion of the event to be at approximately 6-7 PM this evening.  Then an expectation of rain into the overnight hours is next.  We will begin by monitoring and treating the main arterial streets until they are safe for travel.  We will then move into the residential street routes with the hope of seeing the ice on the pavement melt and break up enough to plow the streets from curb to curb.  On the driver’s last pass through the residential streets, they will apply an additional spread of salt to the pavement.  We are planning to remove as much ice pack as possible from the pavement throughout this event and over the next couple of days, while battling the elements that we are faced with.  We are all looking forward to the warm up by midweek which will give some assistance to the melt down of the remnants from the previous storm that we are dealing with.  Once again, if you must travel, we encourage you to be safe and travel with caution.  Thanks!
