Peoria High Schoolers to Close out Mayor’s Youth Program with Broader Horizons

Some Peoria high school students had an enriching summer filled with work, fun, and learning via the Mayor’s Youth Program. This year’s program focused on giving new life to some of the City’s green infrastructure projects and supporting the stormwater utility. More than a dozen students completed the eight-week program – performing litter pickup, tire collection, mulching, and more.

“This program allows our young people to engage with city staff and local leaders to create positive change within our City,” said Public Works Director Rick Powers. “It’s critical to continue creating opportunities for young people that represent our future . . . so they can learn new skills and have greater exposure to the community around them.”

The 2021 program will conclude at a time when the City of Peoria is looking to diversify its workforce and tap the next generation of community leaders. Therefore, every Friday throughout the program, participants joined presentations from public servants, consulting firms, and skilled trades workers. They learned about opportunities in the community that could lead to a future career and further education.

“We’re proud to advocate for our summer youth program,” said Powers. “The program provides an outstanding opportunity for our future leaders to learn more about what our City does and hopefully encourages them to consider a career in public service.”

The program will wrap up Friday, July 30 at Twin Towers Plaza across from City Hall on Fulton Street. Members of the media are welcome to attend the event.

“I’m going to really miss this program,” said Mayor’s Youth Program student worker, Joshua Johnson. “It was a highlight of my summer . . . the best highlight of my summer.”
