PeoriaCorps Program Now Accepting Applications

Members gain skills for job readiness and learn about green infrastructure maintenance

August 4, 2022 (Peoria, IL) Applications are now being accepted for the City of Peoria PeoriaCorps program, an AmeriCorps-based six-month workforce development pre-apprenticeship program that focuses on environmental stewardship, community service, education, job readiness, and green infrastructure.

Born out of a need to maintain the green infrastructure created to assist in the City’s combined sewer overflow problems, Corps members learn the principles of green infrastructure maintenance.   Elements of green infrastructure include pervious pavers, rain gardens and bioswales, all designed to capture rainwater before it gets into our infrastructure.   Members also can also obtain credentials through the National Green Infrastructure Certification Program (NGICP) and OSHA certification.

Members receive a biweekly living allowance, and the opportunity to earn monetary bonuses and an educational award. Uniforms and tools are provided.

In addition to classroom learning, job readiness, and fieldwork, Corps Members focus on specific service projects throughout their program.  Past projects include a beautification project at VFW Post #8662 on Western Avenue and collaborating on a mural at Trewyn School on MLK Jr. Day, and many other service projects completed throughout the community.

PeoriaCorps originated when members of the City of Peoria Innovation Team (i-team) met with an advisory committee comprised of community organizations, business leaders, government officials, and other stakeholders.  The program was launched in October 2017.

Applications may be found on the City’s website. Applications will be open until positions are filled.
