Peoria Township Assessor

The Peoria Township is the largest township in Peoria County with over 41,000 parcels and a market value over $5.3 Billion.  The Assessor is responsible for establishing the values on all parcels within the Peoria Township with the highest standards of professionalism.  The Assessor does not levy taxes.  The values determined by the Assessor are used by other government entities to levy their taxes against.  The Assessor and his staff determine the fair market value of properties to ensure each taxpayer pays only his or her fair share of taxes.  The office maintains an open door policy to serve the taxpayers of Peoria.

Max E Schlafley

Max E. Schlafley, CIAO, has over 22 years of real estate valuation and assessment experience at Township and County levels of government with over 12 years in the Peoria Township Assessor’s office.  He has held the Certified Illinois Assessor Officer (CIAO) designation since 1991.  In addition, Max has held licenses as a State Certified Residential Appraiser since 1993 in Illinois and Colorado, upgrading to State Certified General Appraisal license in 2006 in Illinois.  Max began his career as an appraiser in the Peoria Township Assessor’s office from 1990 to 1993.   He left in 1993 to work with various townships as an appraiser for the Peoria County Supervisor of Assessments office from 1993 to 1999.   In 1999, Max took a position as Chief Appraiser/Appraisal Coordinator at a County in the mountains of Colorado, home of several ski resorts.   He was responsible for supervising 10 appraisers, the commercial valuation, and assessment appeals in the County with over $ 15 billion in valuation.   In 2002, Max returned to the Peoria Township Assessor’s office to become the Chief Deputy Appraiser responsible for the appraisal department and appeals.  Throughout his career, he has developed extensive residential and commercial mass appraisal for assessments and individual appraisal experience providing expert testimony before various appeal boards in Illinois and Colorado.  Over the last 10 years, due to his experience, Max has also assisted on his own time various townships and counties, at their request, to complete their assessment cycle.

Max has been involved with the community volunteering the past 25 years coaching soccer and basketball at the Park District, Christian Center, Dream Center, and Carver Center.  He enjoys sailing, swimming, and coaching his kids in sports.
