Common Code Violations

Code Violations found in front, back, and side yards as well as other green spaces are called Environmental Violations. 

Here is a list of the most common code violations: 

• Grass over 10 inches tall
• Loose garbage and litter
• Downed tree limbs
• Garbage totes left at the curb or in the alley after your scheduled pick up day

Code Violations found on homes, apartment buildings, and commercial structures are called Housing Violations. 

Here is a list of the most common code violations: 

• Peeling paint
• Damaged siding
• Damaged gutters
• Rotting wood
• Boarded windows
• Boarded doors
• Broken fence
• Damaged roof

Code violations found on vehicles and trailers are handled by Code Enforcement Inspectors when a vehicle is parked on private property. 

If a vehicle or trailer is parked on public property, such as the street, Code Enforcement will forward the complaint to the Police Department's Parking Enforcement team.

A vehicle is considered inoperable by Code Enforcement if it has: 

• A flat tire
• A broken windshield
• An expired State of Illinois registration sticker
• Not moved or demonstrated evidence that it operates
