RYAN RASHAD REED
R. Rashad Studio
Occupation: Ryan Rashad Reed is a sculptor and painter whose public works include murals along Western Avenue and on the NAACP building along MacArthur Hwy. He has taught classes and workshops throughout Peoria and offers private paint parties at his studio, R. Rashad Studio. He also takes private commissions for portraits. But he spends most of his time traveling throughout the country showcasing and selling his work at art fairs, trade shows and conferences such as Art Basel in Miami, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s annual legislative conference, The Links Inc. and the National Medical Association.
Community Involvement: Mr. Reed is a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the Peoria graduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
Education: Bachelor of fine arts, comprehensive art, Hampton University
Three things he’s passionate about: “Our community (Nubians/Black people), the arts community (visual and performing), and increased knowledge and appreciation for both.”
Three favorite hobbies: Woodworking and cooking
Career influence or inspiration: Three sculptors inspire and influence him most, Auguste Rodin, Richard MacDonald and Preston Jackson. Rodin’s famous sculpture, ‘The Thinker,’ has fascinated him since he was a child. MacDonald is a San Francisco-based artist he admires. And Jackson has been a mentor and teacher since high school. Though he has seen work from artists around the world, he still considers Jackson one of the most masterful he’s ever seen. “He’s an example to me of how to approach the craft, I still learn from him to this day.”
Inspirational quote: “Preparation over procrastination.”
