Occupation: Latoya Brown, executive director of East Peoria Housing Authority, oversees all administrative functions of the agency, which provides federally-subsidized rental assistance for Tazewell County residents. The East Peoria Housing Authority includes a Housing Choice Voucher, or Section 8, program and Leisure Acres, a 100-unit housing complex for people 55 and over whose income meets federal poverty guidelines.
Community Involvement: She is president of the board of Phoenix Community Development Services (PCDS) and a board member of METEC Resource Center. She is also secretary of the Elizabeth Lindsay Club of National Association of Colored Women and a member of Peoria City/County Joint Commission on Racial Justice and Equity.
Education: Bachelor of Arts, business management and administration, Bradley University
Three things she’s passionate about: “I am passionate about community service; uplifting our community and personal development. I enjoy learning new things.”
Three favorite hobbies: “In my free time, I enjoy outdoor activities and painting. I also enjoy gardening at home. . .and I worked with PCDS to build and create a community garden on the corner of Perry and Wayne St. in Peoria.”
Career Influence or Inspiration: “My mother, Monica Johnson, is always inspirational. She continually teaches the value of hard work and unconditional love. She is resilient and always supportive; she’s an example of a strong Black woman.”
