Principal, Manual High School


Occupation: In her role as principal of Manual High School, Devon Hawks’ main focus is providing a safe and productive learning environment for students and staff. She is responsible for daily operations, including developing strategies for continuous improvement, building community partnerships, and meeting the social and emotional needs of students and staff,  


Community Involvement: Ms. Hawks says schools are a foundation of community involvement.  “We’re sending hundreds of students out into the community, hopefully to contribute something to the community. This is not usually looked at in terms of ‘community involvement.’ But if this isn’t it, I don’t know what is.” She is a member of the New Life Christian Church Praise and Worship Team.


Education: Bachelor of science, special education, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville; master of arts, educational leadership, Saint Xavier University; doctorate of educational leadership, St. Edwards University (in progress)  


Three things she’s passionate about: Her relationship with God, family, and equitable access to a quality education for all


Three favorite hobbies: Reading, singing, and binge watching dramatic TV series


Career Influence or Inspiration: Her middle school principal, Deloris Turner, and her mentor, Dr. Annette Coleman
