Director of Activities
Carver Community Center
Occupation: Donna Crowder, director of activities at George Washington Carver Community Center, coordinates youth activities, including Skills USA and after-school programs, and weekend programs for young people and adults. She also works part time as a social-emotional learning coach for Quest Charter Academy’s middle and high school students and as a family liaison for Peoria Public Schools’ Ready, Set, Go Program.
Community Involvement: Ms. Crowder serves on the Susan G. Komen Circle of Promise Board, the City of Peoria Housing Commission and Illinois’ Restore, Reinvest and Renew (R3) Program, which funds programs in areas hardest hit by the war on drugs. She volunteers for many community projects, including one she founded, Gifts With a Message, which provides gifts for women in Peoria County Jail.
Education: She has taken classes at Capella University.
Three things she’s passionate about: “I am passionate about the education of children and their well-being, residents who do not have access to life’s basic necessities, and treating people with kindness.”
Three favorite hobbies: “My three favorite hobbies are riding motorcycles, jet skis and spending time with my students.”
Career influence or inspiration: The late Margaret Crowder, her mother, and the late Mildred Wayne, her grandmother. “My mother always kept a good attitude, despite her struggles. That’s why I always try to be kind. My grandmother was always my cheerleader, whether I was right, wrong or indifferent. That’s why I know having a cheerleader makes a difference.”
