Artist Statement
For this project, I sought to experiment with a variety of materials and innovative techniques. I found myself particularly drawn to the textures of everyday objects around me, prompting me to capture photographs of various items in my home. These textures would serve as the foundation for my poster design. As I explored, I began to notice the typography hidden in the folds of plastic bags and the unnecessarily complicated recycling instructions that often accompany certain items.
After gathering my images, I carefully recolored them to align with a palette of green, orange, and brown. These colors were chosen intentionally to emphasize the significance of recycling while also raising awareness about the potential environmental consequences of improper disposal. Embedded within the poster are various recycling labels, instructions, statistics, and helpful resources, such as earth911.com, to guide viewers in properly recycling in their own communities.
My aim was to capture the viewer’s attention with a striking design, encouraging them to uncover the subtle details woven into the composition that further communicated my concept. I envisioned the poster being displayed in an urban area, where pedestrians and drivers alike could encounter it. By placing the design in such a visible location, I hoped to spark reflection on personal recycling habits and inspire greater environmental mindfulness within the community.
